Mark Aucamp — The Honest Pensioner
“I started Honest Pensioner because I kept seeing the same thing. Older people being confused, misled, or simply left behind when it came to their money. That’s not good enough. Everyone deserves straight-talking financial information — especially when they’re living on a fixed income and every pound matters.”
— Mark Aucamp, Editor, Honest Pensioner
Hello — I’m Mark Aucamp

Welcome to Honest Pensioner. I’m Mark — the editor, writer, and driving force behind this site. If you’ve landed here, you’re probably over 55, living on a fixed or pension income, and trying to make sense of a financial system that often feels like it wasn’t designed with you in mind.
You’re in the right place.
I’ve spent years working in personal finance media — writing about money, explaining complex topics in plain English, and helping older people cut through the noise to find information they can actually use. That experience taught me one thing above all else: most financial content is either too jargon-heavy, too product-driven, or aimed squarely at people half our age.
Honest Pensioner exists to change that.
You May Have Heard Me on the BBC
I appeared on the BBC Sunday Breakfast Show as a financial commentator, invited to discuss a report by the Resolution Foundation — an independent think-tank focused on improving living standards for those on low to middle incomes. Speaking to a national radio audience reinforced everything I believe about financial communication: people don’t need more jargon. They need someone who can take complex research and explain what it actually means for people from all walks of life.
That’s exactly the approach I bring to every article on Honest Pensioner.
BBC Sunday Breakfast Show: Mark was invited onto the BBC Sunday Breakfast Show as a financial commentator to discuss a report published by the Resolution Foundation — an independent think-tank focused on improving living standards for those on low to middle incomes. His appearance demonstrated his ability to translate complex economic research into clear, practical commentary for a mainstream audience.
My Background — From Talkmoneyblog to Honest Pensioner

Before launching Honest Pensioner, I was the editor of Talkmoneyblog — a UK personal finance blog that I grew into a commercially successful publication, generating consistent income through sponsored content with reputable financial brands.
Running Talkmoneyblog gave me an inside view of the personal finance media landscape. I saw which content genuinely helped readers and which content was thinly disguised advertising dressed up as advice. I learned what it takes to build trust with an audience — and how quickly that trust can be lost if you put commercial interests before your readers.
I also learned that the over-55s market was hugely underserved. There were plenty of personal finance blogs aimed at young professionals and millennials. But for people in their 60s and 70s — navigating pension decisions, managing fixed incomes, dealing with care costs, worrying about inheritance tax — the honest, practical guidance simply wasn’t there in the way it should be.
That’s why I started Honest Pensioner.
Why I Started Honest Pensioner
The idea for Honest Pensioner grew from a simple frustration. The financial decisions facing older people in the UK are enormous — pensions, equity release, care costs, inheritance tax — and yet the information available is often buried in jargon, locked behind adviser fees, or frankly misleading.
I kept hearing the same stories. Pensioners missing out on benefits they were entitled to. Families blindsided by care costs. People targeted by scams because nobody had warned them.
Honest Pensioner is my answer to all of that. Every piece of content on this site is guided by one question: would a 65-year-old who’s just received a worrying letter find this genuinely useful? If yes, it goes on the site. If not, it doesn’t.
